The History of Hair Sticks

Archeologists have discovered hair sticks in every early civilization. African, Egyptian, Roman, Greek, Japanese, Chinese....May I present the idea that hair sticks are our human races first hair accessory? It incorporates the same concept as sewing. A sharp tapered object piercing a piece of leather, pushing it into another and then back into the original piece. Thus holding the two pieces together with a stitch. So when sewing began, so did hair sticks as they work exactly the same way with the stick being the stitch. You push the hairstick through the bun, into the hair underneath the bun and then back into the bun securely holding the hair style in place.

Hair sticks began their journey as a functional tool but because they offer a medium that can be decorated, they also have provided us with a hair accessory that has defined us as a culture in the past or in todays world, defines us as an individual. The Japanese Geisha hair stick, the 'Kanzashi', is a good example of cultural definition. Hairsticks have always been and always will!
