History of Stix n Stones

I began my hair stick relationship as a little girl, scampering up a tree and cutting a twig with my swiss army knife to create a hairstick to hold back my hair for the remainder of that particular adventure. I have always known how to use one. The real hair stick love affair began in australia 12 years ago. We had a kebob stick dinner on the campfire and as per usual I had cleaned one up, randomly popping a little bead on the top of it and was wearing it to keep my hair up in a bun. A friend said to me, why don't you make them and sell them at the market next weekend?

I had been working on tie dying some vintage slips and added a display of 30 kebob hair sticks to my space. Even that first day, it was all about showing women how to use a hair stick. They looked past the fact that it was a painted, sanded kebob stick and loved the function of it and the feathers, shells and beads that I had decorated them with. I sold out, making enough money to head north to Sydney and joined the Bondi Beach night market. I stepped out of the fruit and veggie picking trade that many travelers utilize to fund their journey in Australia and focused on hairsticks. I was a curbside queen! It was such a thrill to set up a little card table with a few bowls of Whitsunday Island sand and have women clamour for them. It's how the sticks work that make them so magical!

Hair sticks re-shaped my twenties to a large degree. It gave me the freedom that no other career could have given me to fuel my appetite for adventure and travel. I soon evolved past the kebob stick to recycled bits of hardwoods, driftwood, bone and local woods. Always close to nature and for the most part on the ocean, I always have had a bag of hairsticks to fund my travels.

That all began more than a decade ago. Today, I run a hairstick company out of my family's horse ranch in Alberta and have two other artists and myself designing and producing seven lines of 100 percent handmade hairsticks. Each hair stick produced is one of kind with intelligent shape and design to produce a highly functioning, durable, beautiful, original hair stick. Welcome to Stix n Stones!
